The women of the Jorgeñitas group come from the beautiful town of San Jorge la Laguna, a town located at the edges of the beautiful lake of Atitlán. These women reflect at first sight a confidence that calls your attention, so that while conducting the interview I was discovering the reason for this confidence.

The great majority are artisans and they work making necklaces of jewels. They produce beautiful earrings, bracelets, and necklaces with pearlites imported from the Czech Republic. Some say that this art of making necklaces was imported to lake Atitlán by European artisans several decades ago. There are also women who invest their capital in small convenience stores and knitting machines. They buy thread to create beautiful Guatemalan embroidered dresses and traditional blouses.

When the artisans begin to share how they are going to invest their loans one can realize the dimension of their businesses. The jewelers revealed that with the loan that they are going to receive they were going to buy the materials for the necklaces by the kilogram, while the great majority of artisans buy the materials for necklaces by the ounce. This reflects that they are in a little more advanced phase of business development, since the quantity of commodity that they are going to buy is a lot greater than that of the majority of artisans around la Laguna.

The Jorgeñitas have been working with Friendship Bridge for more than a year and they have benefited from the training given by the loan agents. The women commented that they were interested a lot in the themes of saving money, natural medicine and especially family planning. They mentioned what a large impact it had on them to know that a woman is able and has the authority to plan the size of her family.

Also they mentioned that they like to work with microfinance institutions, especially with Friendship Bridge, because they ask few requirements, the disbursements are fast and they help them with their business. If you contribute to the success of these artisans then they are going to be able to continue developing their qualities as businesswomen and artisans.

Jorgenitas Group – San Jorge

My First visit this morning with loan officer Gloria is to the lovely place called San Jorge. I guess all lenders to this group might know this is right at lake Atitlan. San Jorge has some STUNNING views and the church where we meet has a nice open field in front of it overlooking the whole lake.

The women of the group all have had 5 credits before this 6th one and all work in the art of making jewellery of the tiniest beads. They make bracelets and necklaces, small decorations to decorate the house and rings. I bet you need to have real good eyes to be able to do this day in day out!

Maria tells me she has learned to work with the beads when she was a little girl and her kids help her after school. She tells me she has twin girls of 7 years of age who just have started to go to school and two other kids of 12 and 14. she is very proud the kids do well in school and she hopes they can choose a profession rather then do what the whole village is doing like herself!

someone who is doing a bit something different is Gloria who has a small shop with daily consumer goods right at the square in front of the lake. She tells me her business is going well because of her first class location. Also: recent celebrations of Guatemala’s independence at the 15th of this month gave her the opportunity to sell much more then usual.

We often read the stories about these women wanting their children to do well, study and have better chances in life. Friendship Bridge has education firmly stated in their mission statement and therefore sometimes offers intern ships to school girls as also to Gloria Trinidad. She is in school to become a secretary and is the daughter and sister of two members of a Kiva group called Costureras. I decided to take her with me into the field and let her write a story about the places we visit. The nice result, in Spanish, is what you can read here!
