El Sokhy is 44 years old. She farms rice in her home province of Kampong Cham. This is a hard profession and her profits only come out to US$1 per day of work. She has known work in the fields all her life, however, as she has been farming since 1979. Her husband, Sang Chea, is the local barber. He earns US$2 per day. Of their four children, only one is married. Two of the older unmarried children contribute to the family income. One is a garment factory worker, earning US$80 per month and the other works in construction, earning US$3 per day. She wants to support her husband in his unique trade by buying him better tools to use for cutting hair. Barbers in the provinces rarely have more than a comb, a flat razor, and a pair of rusty scissors. With more modern tools he will attract much more business than he does now.
