Hyline Kerubo is an average Kenyan woman. She's 29 years old and has three children. She also lives with the orphaned child of her late brother.

Hyline started operating her business two years ago after accumulating savings from her former work place in a local school in Kisii town. She currently operates a small retail vegetable business, selling kale, tomatoes, onions, cabbages, bananas, and mangos to customers in the neighborhood.

Hyline must support her children and her husband, who has a low-paying job. With the help of her loan, she'll be able to purchase more stock of different vegetables and fruits, which will enable her to increase sales. This will also enable her to pay school fees for her children.

Disclaimer: Due to recent events in Kenya, the security situation in many communities remains unsettled, affecting many local businesses. Lenders to this entrepreneur should be aware that this loan may represent a higher default risk, and should be willing to accept this additional risk in making their loan.

Menyikwa Jua Kali Group Fellow Update

Entrepreneur: Menyikwa Jua Kali Self-help Group
Location: Kisii, Kenya

Update by Zack Turner, Kiva Fellow with OI-Wedco in Kenya:

I met with Wilfred after Menyinkwa Jua Kali’s group meeting with their loan officer. His displayed a heartfelt enthusiasm for his group and the assistance of micro-loans on his life. He is married with two very young children.

Wilfred is a motorbike taxi driver. He enjoys working for himself and appreciates that he doesn’t have to carry stock for his business like others in his group do. He says that he makes around 600-1000 schillings per day ($9-15). His expenses include licenses, fuel, oil, and general maintenance. Wilfred is grateful for the ways that his loan has enabled him to own his home, buy food, and save for his children’s future school fees.

During the post-election crisis, Wilfred didn’t have any customers and struggled to maintain his bills. He was grateful that business picked up after peace was restored.

He used his portion of the loan to purchase his motorbike and has been using his profits to pay for his other expenses. With his next loan he hopes to buy another motorbike and employ a driver.

The group suffered from the lack of available transportation. Many have supplier in Nairobi and the were unable to get there. Thus, some ran out of stock and had nothing to sell.

**

Special Notes:

This loan was posted mid-cycle on Kiva for extraordinary reasons. After peace and stability was restored, Opportunity International-Wedco chose to reschedule the loans of groups impacted by the post-election crisis. Kiva offered to help by posting the groups that were rescheduled, thus this extended update.

Hyline Kerubo is no longer a member of Menyinkwa Jua Kali as per her business description. She withdrew from the group because a loan assessor determined that she didn’t have the capacity for the loan. Hyline had several absences from mandatory group trainings. Her husband didn’t want her to be out of the house for such lengths of time. Instead of disqualifying the group, they found a capable replacement with Wilfred. Overlap must have occurred between the interviewers visit and the groups posting for funding. We apologize for the error.
