Melita belongs to the Banco Comunal La Familia group, located in Av. Alfredo Eglintong Mz C Lt. 1, in the district of Calleria, in the county of Ucayali. She is 63 years old and has 3 kids. Her husband makes metal sheets, but his income is not enough to keep them afloat. With the first loan from Manuela Ramos of $300 Melita invested in selling food and cold drinks.

Now she is still selling food. She gets up at 6am and with the help of her kids she makes delicious vegetable stews and on the weekend she goes out and sells, so that she gets more clients. Melita cooks very well so her clients are always happy.

With this loan of $1500, which she will repay over a period of 4 motnhs, she will buy tablecloths, plates, disposable spoons, rice etc.

Melita says that she has always liked to work; it makes her feel independent, and she likes her business as she can speak to her clients and she makes lots of friends, and this makes her feel more like a woman and businesswoman.

Update on your loan recipient, Melita Tipto from Pucallpa, Peru

Entrepreneur: Melita Tipto Sanchez De Macedo
Location: Callería - Ucayali, Peru

Melita has a business selling juices and sandwiches in the mornings on the porch in front of her home. Melita’s juices come in three flavors: papaya, apple and mixed (which includes carrots, bananas, beets and other fruits). She also has a lunch menu for later in the day. Melita begins selling her juices around 5:30 am and finishes mid-morning at which time she begins work on the lunch menu. She usually finishes up for the day around 3:00. On Saturdays and Sundays Melita sets up her grill out front and sells grilled chicken, yuca, plantains and “juanes” (a rice dish typical of the region). She also has a ready supply of sodas and beer available for her customers. Melita has an excellent location for her business—-she is right on a main road with steady traffic throughout the day. Melita did tell me, however, that business has been a bit sluggish lately due to the global economic downturn.

Melita has been working with Kiva partner Manuela Ramos since 2000 and was one of the founding members of her communal bank, “La Familia” (The Family). The founders gave the bank this name because at the time the majority of its members were from the Tipto family. Melita still has 6 relatives in the bank, including her sister and two of her daughters. She is currently paying back a loan of 1500 soles (about $500) which she used to pay some bills and also to purchase food in bulk for her restaurant business. She is proud to have never once gotten behind on her loan payments.

Melita is married and has three adult children. Her husband works full time in a timber enterprise. Melita has been working her whole life and feels that her loans from Manuela Ramos have helped her. She used her first loan to fix up her kitchen appliances. Prior to beginning work with Manuela Ramos, Melita had her restaurant in a nearby market. Three years ago she moved the restaurant to her front porch due to excessive competition in the market.

Melita’s goal is to have a refrigerated display case so she can sell desserts like flan, cake and gelatin and also display her drink options to her customers. Melita is pictured here in the early morning in front of her juice stand. (Melita invited me to her BBQ this weekend—-on Sunday I had a chance to chat with her sister while Melita treated me to delicious marinated grilled chicken with plantains and yuca!)
