Mambo from Mbeya, Tanzania! This is 22 year old Rose Kisambwe. She is married and has a one year old child. She also has two dependents, who live with her because they are her sisters. In 2003, Rose established her market stall business. Rose has already received and successfully repaid one loan from SELFINA. She now requires a new loan in order to purchase stock of crops in bulk for resale. She thanks you for your support.

SELFINA is engaged in the economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through the provision of a leasing and leaseback microfinance facility, as a practical way to achieve the economic and social emancipation of women.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro-leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus they are termed not-creditworthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support hence poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital SELFINA buys equipment from said client, extending a loan to her, then leasing back the same equipment – a process called a sale and leaseback arrangement.

Dear lenders,

Mambo (Greetings!) from Kyela, Tanzania and from SELFINA! Thank you for your loan through Kiva to Rose Kisambwe, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur. The purpose of this journal is to update you on Rose and the status of her business.

As you know, your generosity helped Rose obtain a loan of $825 in April 2008. She is running a crops business and used the loan to purchase crops in bulk for her business

She works at her business for 10 hours per day, 6 days per week. Since she took out the loan, her business has been doing well and Rose’s monthly profits have increased from about $180 to approximately $240. She has used these extra profits to repay her loan, paying rent, water bills, electricity, bills and better food for her family.

. On the personal front, her family is doing well. As you may remember, she is married and has one child. Rose dreams about being able to send her child to school. SELFINA aims to continue to assist Rose and other women like her, and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you very much for supporting Rose!
