Rose Nakimyowa is the chairperson of the group. She is a 36-year-old woman who, together with her husband, sells charcoal, tomatoes and watermelon to Kampala market vendors. They buy the bags of charcoal locally and sell them at a mark up of over 300% in town, where charcoal is in high demand and very expensive. The tomatoes and watermelon are grown on their land. They have been running this business for 10 years and are now in the position to rent a truck to take their produce to town each week. (Previously, they borrowed friends'
cars and now they are pleased to be self-sufficient.) Rose and her husband are hoping to one day buy a market stall in town to complement their wholesale business.

Rose is planning to buy many more bags of charcoal with the loan. It provides the business with its best profit margin generally and purchasing in bulk will make it even more profitable.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

Journal Entrepreneur: Tuutuuka Group 1 Location: Kayunga, Uganda Usually Rose Nakimyowa gets loans from Pearl Microfinance to enable her buy more bags of charcoal for sale and this time round, she was able to pay the labor involved as well as paying off their workers on their farm land. Her husband is very supportive of her group borrowing and the repayments are a combined effort since the money helps them both and their family. They have a plan that once they get a stall in town, the wife will be managing it, while the husband will remain with the duty of doing the field work.
