For these 3 women of Salelologa Sapulu on the island of Savaii, these are their first loans from SPBD. They all undertook 4 weeks of training on managing a business and maintaining a savings account, and then passed a written test on the SPBD principles: business, savings, weekly meetings, payments and group guarantee. Over the next 52 weeks, they will support each other in their individual business development and to guarantee on-time payments.

Vasati Peni, 42, is divorced with 3 children. She has over 2 years experience in sewing. She sews t-shirts, uniforms and puletasis (dresses). Her loan will be used to purchase a sewing machine, material, thread and other items. She will sell her clothing 5 days per week.

Tiotala Smith, 56, is married with 5 children. Her husband is a fisherman and a farmer. She has over 3 years of experience farming taro. With her loan, she will purchase a weed killer, pesticides, and 2,000 taro roots.

Sina Matafai, 67, is married with 6 children. Her husband is unable to work because of sickness. She is helping her son start a hair salon. With her loan, she will purchase clippers, scissors, a comb, a mirror, shelves, and a chair.
