In the city of El Alto lies the Villa Tejada Focus Center, to which the Antofagasta Association has been a part of for over 4 years and consists of 16 women anxious to prosper in their small businesses.

The majority of the group’s members are married and say they need to help their husbands with their household’s finances since each have an average of 4 children. Such is the case of Eugenia, who regretfully widowed and had to care for her family on her own and now needs greater earnings to persevere.

The chief activity in the group is sales. They sell chompas (ponchos) woven in wool, prepared meals, natural fruit juices, cosmetics and other items depending on the season, which they sell in the fair of the Tiahuanacu market in the city of El Alto. They need capital to increase their merchandise stock, and in that way generate greater income for their families.

Translated from Spanish by Evelyn Garcia, Kiva Volunteer.
