Ms. Confort Amegatse is a friendly woman of 44 who lives and works in Adéta, Togo, a medium-sized town about 150 kilometers away from the capital, Lomé. Confort is married and the mother of 4 children who all go to school nearby. To pay for her childrens’ education, Confort sells refreshing drinks and snacks in the central market in Adéta. She has strategically placed her stand at the entrance to the market, to catch thirsty shoppers on their way in and out. Confort specializes in Akpan Glacé, a traditional refreshing snack of soaked maize, which becomes soft and puffy, mixed with ice and sugar. She also sells Citron Glacé, iced lemonade, which helps to quench shoppers’ thirsts on a hot Togolese afternoon. Confort hopes to use her loan to buy more maize, sugar, ice, and lemons so that she can continue to run her refreshment stand, which allows her to provide for her family.
