They both earn about $10 per day and have five children, two married and three single. One is a grocer in Siem Reap, while another is a motorbike taxi driver. The other three children are students.

Mr. Savann seeks a $1,100 loan to expand his mushroom growing business. He hopes this investment will improve his family’s financial stability and pay for his children’s education. Savann, Chea, and their child are shown in the photo.

Lucrative Mushrooms

Entrepreneur: Dy Savann
Location: Kompong Cham, Cambodia

Dy Savann operates a very successful mushroom farm. He confirmed for me that he used his Kiva loan to purchase plastic, bamboo, and a pumping machine. All of these items are necessary for the mushroom farm that he operates. He told me that the next step for his business is to purchase a motorcycle, but that he does not know if he will need to take an additional loan to do so.

Before he had the loan with Kiva, Mr. Savann’s mushroom farm was in a state of disrepair, so he could only grow enough mushrooms to earn $1.25 - $3.00 in net profit. Now that his mushroom farm is operating smoothly he earns $5 - $10 per day, and as much as $25 on a good day. He still has ambitions to further expand his mushroom-growing business, but because his children are planning on leaving soon to Phnom Penh to pursue their education, he will be short on help around his mushroom farm.

He said that now that his mushroom farm is operating smoothly, he can afford to send his children to school.

In the attached picture you can see Mr. Savann in front of aisles of mushroom incubators as he explains to us how to grow mushrooms.
