Hafizullah is 38. He’s been a farmer all his life. He owns, in partnership with his young brother, few acres of land in an eastern district of Kabul province called Bagrami. Almost everyone in the vast Bagrami area has little or more pieces of land and are busy with agriculture and animal husbandry.

The borrower used the loan funds to purchase potato seeds, fertilizer, and pesticides early this spring. This is the first time he is working on loan money which he highly appreciates. He is happy with the progress of his farming however, like many other farmers in Afghanistan, he has plenty of complains about irrigation water. Although he had to dig a 75 meter (246 feet) deep well few years ago to secure abundant water for his land, the well does not yield enough to supply sufficient water for the crops. A deeper well means more gas for the electric water pump but does not guarantee more water in all parts of the country.

The client has borrowed $1,000 and has been able to make his last four repayment installments in full and on time. Hafiz has three small kids but together with his old parents and sisters, he has 12 dependents.

Hafiz is hoping that he will soon be able to make enough money to dig a second well to secure enough water for his land. In addition, he is hoping to purchase a cow in near future to at least provide a richer breakfast for the household if not sell the dairy products.
