Jennet Lum

Jennet Lum and her son, Emmanuel Suh, have been part of GHAPE for seven years. Jennet herself has taken six Empowerment Credits (ECs=loans), the most recent of which was for 200,000 CFA ($500 USD) in March of 2008. The day of the group meeting which Jennet was to be interviewed, Emmanuel gave information about their involvement because Jennet was working on the property outside of town where the family has their farm. Emmanuel is a builder and lives in the town where the main GHAPE office is located.

Jennet and her son have used the most recent EC for the purchase of 5 pigs, which are about 15,000 CFA each. They have also bought seeds to plant on their farm, which produces plantain, peanuts, corn and cocoyams which they sell at the market for a profit of about 150,000 CFA ($325 USD). After one year, they are also able to sell the five pigs for about 300,000 CFA ($750 USD).

Jennet is an older married woman with five children. Three of her children are still in school. Her son who attends GHAPE meetings with her says that the loans they have received have really helped and that each month the payments are small enough that they don’t present a problem to pay back. They hope to continue borrowing with GHAPE and add more business to their small production with fowls to sell as well. “I like this model, they give advice to we the young ones,” says Emmanuel.
