After four weeks of rigorous business training, these 14 women of Salelavalu Tai on the island of Savaii, passed their written tests on the SPBD principles (business, savings, weekly meetings, payments and group guarantee) to ensure their first group loan from SPBD. Over the next year, they will support each other in their individual business development to guarantee on-time payments.

Naomi Utoaluga, 45, has eight children and a husband who is an engineer. Five days a week, Naomi works at her stand in the Salelologa market where she sells gel, soap, shoes and powder. With the loan, she intends to buy a resupply of the hygiene products to earn a net cash flow of 270 Tala (~ 108 USD) per week.

Fetaiai Tuioti, 50, has three children and is divorced. Once a week she has a stand at the market in Salelologa where she sells taro and bananas, both staples of the Samoan diet. With the loan, she intends to buy a pick, shovel, spade and fencing materials to keep animals out of her plantation. She intends to earn a net cash flow of 120 Tala (~ 48 USD) per week.

Paese Toese, 41, has one child and is single. Over three days per week, Paese sells clothing (t-shirts, dresses and school uniforms) from her home. She has over three years of experience in the business. With the loan, she intends to buy a sewing machine, cloth and other materials to earn a net cash flow of 170 Tala (~ 68 USD) per week.

Perenise Sagaga, 30, has three children and her husband is a fisherman. During three days of the week, she sells sea cucumbers and fish in Salelavalu. With the loan, she will buy a boat, nets, knife and other fishing materials that her husband will use to fish. She plans to earn a net cash flow of 110 Tala (~44 USD) per week.

The other women will use their loans for the following purposes:

Eka Sakai, Fanaafi Sakaio, Tulai Faapoi and Taumafai Laau: farming materials for growing taro, yams and bananas.

Sau Taulelei, Kemeta Nove and Pilua Muliaga: boats and nets for fishing.

Limasene Setefano: Elei printing (traditional Samoan way of fabric printing).

Telesia Anitelea: raising cattle.

Fiamama Nove: selling yeast, flower and sugar to make pancakes (round lumps of fried bread) in the market.
