After four weeks of rigorous business training, these six women of Satupaitea Mosula on the island of Savaii, passed their written tests on the SPBD principles (business, savings, weekly meetings, payments and group guarantee) to ensure their first group loan from SPBD. Over the next year, they will support each other in their individual business development to guarantee on-time payments.


Merenaite Faigalotu, 30, married, with five children, has over two years of experience growing vegetables. Specifically, she sells cabbages, cucumbers and tomatoes. Her husband is a seasoned farmer. With her loan, she will purchase cucumbers, cabbages, fertilizer, weed killing sprayer and pesticides.


Esi Afesulu, 41, married, with five children, has over three years of experience in maintaining a taro plantation. Taro is a staple of the Samoan diet. Her loan will be used to purchase a weed killing sprayer, pesticides, 2 bush knives, a filing and a spade. She hopes to earn a net cash flow of 310 Tala (~120 USD) per week.


Silika Lautafi, 29 and married, has worked in tandem with her husband growing cabbage and taro for over two years. A loan will permit her to purchase cabbage seeds, barbed wire, a filing, and a knife, a weed killing sprayer, a rake and fertilizer.


Fetu Taele, 38, married, with two children, has worked in tandem with her husband, catching and selling fish for over two years. With her loan, she will purchase a fishing boat, a lantern, a spear and fishing boots. Together, they expect to earn a net cash flow of 220 Tala (~88 USD) per week.


Fue Meatuai, 34, married, with four children, bakes banana chips sold to the other villagers, public and school children. She will use her loan to purchase pots, oil, bowls and other materials to bake the chips.


Solema Iosia, 28, married, with one child, works with her husband catching selling fish. With her loan, she will purchase a fishing boat, goggles, a cooler and fishing boots.
