For these 9 women of Faga 2 on the island of Savaii, these are their first loans from SPBD. They all undertook 4 weeks of training on managing a business and maintaining a savings account, and then passed a written test on the SPBD principles: business, savings, weekly meetings, payments and group guarantee. Over the next 52 weeks, they will support each other in their individual business's development and help each other guarantee on-time payments.

Aiulu Toealetina (33, married, 4 children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, pesticides, a knife, an axe and a knife filing in order to increase production of taro and bananas, staples of the Samoan diet. Her husband does the farming. She sells the produce once a week at the Salelologa market.

Vaivao Leneuoti (54, divorced, 7 children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, pesticides, a bush knife, an axe, a knife filing, a mixing bucket and rubber gloves in order to increase production of taro. Her children help her with the planting.

Vaelua Ioasa (76, married, 7 children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, pesticides, a can and a wheelbarrow in order to help her and her husband farm taro.

Faalogoifo Seti (43, married, 4 children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, pesticides, a bush knife and a filing in order to expand her taro business.

Kuka Taimalie (31, married, 3 children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, bush knife, wire, pesticides and knife filing in order to increase her production of taro.

Elena Liu (25, married, 2 children): purchase a sewing machine, weed-killing sprayer, pesticides and a mixing bucket. She will use the new equipment to raise taro and make puletasis (dresses) and T-shirts.

Tala Siaosi (25, single, no children): purchase a weed-killing sprayer, pesticides, a spade, a bush knife, an axe and a knife filing. Her brothers do the farming and she sells the taro once a week.

Molly Tosoga (35, married, 4 children): purchase a stove, oil, kerosene, pots, salt, plastic bags and bananas. She is starting a banana chip business. She will sell the banana chips 6 days per week.

Tagi Asovale (23, married, 1 child): purchase a weed-killing machine, barbed wire, pesticides, 2 bush knives and knife filing in order to increase her taro-selling business.
