Update on Puapuaga Taala's Loan

Entrepreneur: Puapuaga Taala
Location: Vaitoloa, Samoa

I had the fortune of recently visiting Puapuaga Taala and briefly chatting with her about her business. Puapuaga Taala’s banana plantation business is doing well. Over the past year she has expanded her operations to making Samoan banana “pancakes” – more like doughnuts than pancakes – which she sells a few times a week outside the local school to school children. Puapuaga’s loan from South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) was used to buy materials for harvesting her bananas and making banana pancakes. Also Puapuaga now has a watercress garden. She sells her watercress to the families and shops of her village three days a week. From her watercress operations she earns around 200 tala per week and from her banana pancake operation she earns 140 tala per week. Puapuaga recently took out another loan from SPBD for 300 tala to finance her childrens education.

SPBD's philosophy of lending is based on a respect for each individual's innate human ingenuity, drive and self esteem. It is these qualities which make people credit worthy, not the collateral which traditional banks demand. To learn more about SPBD, click here.
