Isidoro is 56 and has lived in the Villa Reconciliacion neighborhood with his wife and two children for many years. His wife started a business out of their home selling Fritanga, which is a kind of fried food, such as meat, plantains, etc. Ten years ago, using his own money, he bought a car to use as a taxi, and together, these two businesses have allowed the couple to provide for the family. They have been able to improve their family's lives and provide a pleasant home. The loan Isidoro is requesting will be used to close off the sides of their house and guarantee his family's safety. There is crime in their neighborhood, and as the head of the family, he is worried about making sure that thieves can't get into the house to rob or injure his family.

Loan update from Nicaragua!

Entrepreneur: Isidoro Gonzalez Gutierrez
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

We were able to talk to Isidoro about his loan from Kiva when he came by the AFODENIC office to pay off the final installment of his loan. He arrived, of course, in the taxi which is his primary source of income. The white car bears not only the standard green and yellow label of “Taxi Managua”, but the seal of his taxi cooperative with the motto “Dios, Amor, Paz y Justicia”, meaning God, love, peace and justice. Most taxi drivers become part of a cooperative with others to be able to share costs on such things as insurance for the whole group, or even to access discounted gas.

This loan funded through Kiva is actually the 15th microloan that Isidoro has been granted by Kiva’s partner here in Nicaragua, AFODENIC, because he has consistently been a good client and shown himself to be creditworthy by making on time payments.

He did use the money as he originally intended, and was able to build a wall around his home. With the new wall he feels that he has provided much better protection for himself and his family at home. They have not had any incidents yet, but there is a significant amount of crime in his area, as in much of Managua. He explained that many people feel it has gotten worse since the government passed laws making it too difficult to lock up youth offenders, so that even if they are caught they are right back on the street causing trouble in no time.

He also said that since the wall divides his property from the neighbors, it also affords his family a sense of privacy that they didn’t have before, creating a sense of space that is theirs. He said many times that he was grateful for having been able to access this, and his previous loans, and is hoping to continue to do so in the future.
