Yenku has overcome significant obstacles to get where he is today. In particular, Yenku is a double-amputee who lost both his hands during the brutal civil war in Sierra Leone. A 30-year-old father of three, he runs a small grocery stall in Kundibaya village, which is 15 miles from Kabala town. Before he received a loan from SMT, Yenku survived by begging in the street of Kabala town and, as one might imagine, life was extremely hard for him and his family. Through lengthy discussions with SMT staff, SMT recognized that Yenku has strong business skills. Consequently, SMT provided him with a loan of $100 to start a business with a solidarity group comprised of four other war amputees. Today, Yenku is off the street and is managing his business in the village. He sells cotton clothes, cosmetics, etc. Assisted by his wife, the family has built a small mud house and has a small farm. Yanku’s plan is to build a bright future for his children and his wife, and he would like to expand his business. He is requesting a loan of Le. 1,000,000.

Update for Yenku Sesay

Entrepreneur: Yenku Sesay
Location: Kabala, Sierra Leone

Yenku Sesay is very eager to let you know how his grocery business is doing in Kabala, Sierra Leone. The fact that Yenku is a double amputee from his country’s rebel war does not discourage him. With the help of his loan he has been able to grow his business. He used the money from his loan to increase his inventory of products such as soap, tomato paste, biscuits, dehydrated milk, fabrics, and soft drinks.

Yenku is an extremely industrious person. His loan officer says that Yenku always makes his repayments early. Besides running his grocery business, Yenku has also been growing rice in his field. By doing this he hopes that next year he will have a large enough supply of rice stored up for his family so that he can focus his time on expanding his grocery business.

Taking out a micro loan has had a tremendous impact on Yenku’s life. Previously, he was begging for money on the streets of Freetown. He is now self-sufficient and able to provide for his family. Yenku is very grateful for the changes in his life. He wanted to thank you for what you have done for him and sends his blessings.
