Mambo from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania! This is Fatuma Ahamadi. She is 38 years old, married, and has five children between the ages of 10 and 20 years old. In 2005, Fatuma established her general store business. Working seven days a week, and 9 to12 hours a day, she earns about $430 each month from this business. She is assisted by her hursband, children, and one employee. Fatuma has already received and successfully repaid one loan from SELFINA, and now seeks a new loan in order to purchase additional stocks of soap, rice, sugar, biscuits, and cloth. She hopes that this loan will enable her to increase her monthly profits by approximately $175. In the future, Fatuma plans to open a new business. She thanks you for your support.

SELFINA is engaged in the economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through the provision of a leasing and leaseback micro-finance facility. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus they are not considered to be credit-worthy by financial institutions because they lack tangible assets that can serve as collateral. As such, low income women in Tanzania typically receive poor financial support and in turn only limited access to basic needs and services.

Fortunately, SELFINA has been a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through micro-leasing to achieve the economic and social emancipation of women in Tanzania. Simply put, SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women through an arrangement called a sale and leaseback transaction. More specifically, when a client needs working capital, SELFINA buys equipment from said client, extends a loan to her to facilitate the transaction, and then leases the equipment back to her.

Dear lenders,

Mambo (Greetings!) from Dar es salaam, Tanzania and from SELFINA! Thank you for your loan through Kiva to Fatuma Ahmad, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur. The purpose of this journal is to update you on Fatuma and the status of her business.

As you know, your generosity helped Fatuma obtain a loan of $ 700 in March 2008. She owns a general store business and used the loan to purchase stock in bulk

She works at her business six days. She is assisted by one employee at her business. Since she took out the loan, her business has been doing well and Fatuma’s monthly profits have increased from about $150 to approximately $250. She has used these extra profits to repay her loan, pay school fees, pay water and electricity bills.

In the future, she is planning to open another business business. On the personal front, her family is doing well. As you may remember, she is married and has one child. SELFINA aims to continue to assist Fatuma and other women like her, and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through micro loans.
