Pascuala would like to set up a general store in her house because she lives 30 minutes from the nearest town, there are no stores in her community, and there are hardly any cars for transportation. With this loan, she would like to purchase rice, sugar, cooking oil, cookies, soft drinks, pasta, etc. She is a 44-year-old mother of 3 children, whom she will be able to better support once her business is in place. The other members of the group are Petrona Hernandez Hernandez and Julia Herandez Hernandez, who both sell fruits and vegetables, and Teresa Maria Pérez Hernandez, who is an artisan.

I met Pascuala from the group Valectic 1. With her Kiva loan she was able to open a convenience store in her own house, where she sells various products such as: rice sugar, cookies, snacks and soda. The store leaves her around $60-80 daily pesos, which allows her to bring additional income to her household. She is 44 years old and has 3 children of which the youngest is Teresa, also a member of the group. Teresa is 17 years old, and she is a craftswoman. She used the loan for buying materials at a close-by city called San Cristobal de las Casas. She buys thread for embroidering traditional blouses. She got married one year ago and her husband grows flowers in the mountain where they live. I was able to chat very quickly with the rest of the members: Petrona, who is 16 years old and she is a merchant of fruits and vegetables. She buys them at the state's capital and resells them in the same city. She does these 2 days per week. Julia is 15 years old and is Petrona’s sister and Teresa’s cousin. She is also a merchant of fruits and vegetables in the streets of Tuxtla Gutierrez (the state’s capital) . Each of these women have a loan of $2000 pesos, being its first loan with Alsol. They are all very grateful for it since it has given them an opportunity to be productive and helpful within their families.
