Even at 74 years old, Alejandrina has the same energy she did when she started her business. For twenty years, she's sold beverages such as colas and mineral water, thanks to a company that presented her with a market stall. She says that before she did a little of everything, selling food, green vegetables and "emoliente" (a hot drink made from barley) that she made herself.

Nothing was an obstacle for Alejandrina who always looked for a way to advance her three children who were then small. Her husband always supported her, happily, in maintaining the household; he also works to this day, as a gardener at a club in Chosica.

What Alejandrina most would like is to stock her small stand with more merchandise.

End of Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Alejandrina Condori
Location: Chosica, Peru

Alejandrina Condori has been working as a streetside vendor in Chosica, Peru for fifteen years. Chosica is a town about 90 minutes east of Lima that is well-known as a winter retreat destination for Limeños tired of the constant clouds in the capital. Mrs. Condori’s stall is well-situated at the corner of the central plaza of Chosica where taxis line up to take visitors back to Lima. Her goal for the loan was to buy more merchandise to fill her stall: the more sodas and snacks she has on hand, the more she can sell and thus the more she can make in profits. She uses her profits both for the upkeep of her house and to feed her three children. She says that their situation has improved since she received the loan and that next time she is likely to ask for 500 soles.

Alejandrina works from 8am to 7pm. The bright yellow color of her stall along with the logo indicates that she belongs to an association of D’Anafria sellers (D’Anafria makes ice cream and chocolates). In the video I have included below, you can see that this association is omnipresent, with stalls nearly every twenty meters in crowded areas. At night, Mrs. Condori wheels her large stall to a nearby shelter where she pays 1 sole a night for storage and security. On the weekends, Mrs. Condori goes to Lima to buy the merchandise she sells throughout the week. When asked about her goals, she laughed and said she just wanted to keep working.

I took a short video of Mrs. Condori when I visited her and you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X36GcvSvKNw

Note that my comment on her location is clearly evident as she makes a sale to a waiting customer in a taxi heading back to Lima.

One quick note, EDAPROSPO is waiting until the end of loans to provide a journal update. In this way, they hope that you can get a better sense of the social impact of your loan. Update on your loan administered by Kiva Field Partner EDAPROSPO

Entrepreneur: Alejandrina Condori
Location: Chosica, Peru

During a routine audit of Field Partner EDAPROSPO, Kiva discovered a number of discrepancies between the information posted to the Kiva website and what actually occurred on the ground. Specifically, many loans uploaded to the website before December 2008 contain inaccurate loan amounts, terms and/or loan uses.

This is in violation of Kiva policy, and as such, as soon as we were alerted to a possible violation we placed EDAPROSPO on "pause." After placing them on pause, Kiva proceeded to execute a complete verification of every loan EDAPROSPO posted to the Kiva website; in total we examined 757 loans.

As a result of our audit, we have discovered that 52% of the loans posted to the Kiva website by field partner EDAPROSPO contain data inaccuracies. 98% of these inaccuracies pertain to loans posted to the Kiva website before December 2008, when EDAPROSPO was under a different management team. After significant management turnover at the end of 2008, almost all loans on the Kiva website contain complete and accurate information and these loans comprise only 2% of the total discovered inaccuracies.

You are receiving this email as we wanted to alert you that, after our verification efforts, Kiva cannot confirm that the specific loan you funded was actually disbursed. We can, however, confirm that the person you lent to is an EDAPROSPO borrower. Because EDAPROSPO has decided to guarantee all loans made on Kiva, you have continued to receive repayments on schedule.

Because the new management team has proven that they are committed to providing accurate and transparent information to the Kiva website, and because they have repaid almost all of the inaccurate loans on-time, Kiva has decided to re-open the Kiva-EDAPROSPO relationship. During this new "pilot" phase on Kiva, we will be working closely with the new EDAPROSPO team, including their internal and external auditors, to continually verify new EDAPROSPO loans posted to Kiva, and if we are alerted to any new inaccuracies we will pause their relationship with Kiva and follow-up accordingly.
