The Mukono Stone Quarry Association is a group of 23 men and women who have brick-making businesses and are applying for a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in their own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

Alice Naluminsa is the chairperson of this group. She is responsible for encouraging the group’s members to repay the loan. She is looking for a loan to enable her to employ three more workers in her brick-making business.

Alice employs five workers in her brick-making business. Each of her workers can produce 500 bricks per day, which she sells to retail customers, mainly to build their own homes. She has had two previous loans that enabled her to employ two full-time workers. Alice’s business has been running since 2003.

Alice and her husband, also a brick-maker, have four children (aged 24, 21, 18 and 12 years). They also live with and support her mother and her two nephews.

Their dream is to eventually be able to buy some land on which to build homes to rent to local villagers. She is also hopeful that her youngest child will qualify as an accountant.

Entrepreneur: Stone Quarry Association Group
Location: Mukono, Uganda

Alice Naluminsa has a business of making bricks and burning them for sale. Being a woman, she can not make enough bricks for the day single handedly hence she hires workers to make the bricks and the payments depend on how many bricks one makes. Once the bricks are dry, the same boys help Alice with arranging them for burning with firewood and at the end of it all, the business is paying. Trucks come to her work place with orders to load bricks and the mode of payment is cash. Alice is making money because it is rare for her to run out of bricks. Working with her husband in the same trade has brought confidence in what she does and as a result, she has been able to look after her mother and her family as she hopes for a better professional life for her children.
