Kiril is a saxophone player in the Karandila Orchestra, a Roma band based in Sliven, Bulgaria.  He has been playing the saxophone since he was 12.    He has no formal music education, but real talent.  His work, however, is unpredictable and seasonal, and has no savings.  Last summer, Kiril began to play with “Southern Nights” orchestra in Sunny Beach, a new tourist destination for western Europeans on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.   Kiril needs this loan to finance the upfront costs for this summer’s work; travel expenses, instrument tuning and the purchase of this year’s uniform.  The loan duration is 1 year, although we expect the preponderance of the loan to be repaid in a shorter time frame.   Lenders interested in learning more about the Roma culture in Bulgaria might find “Bury Me Standing: The Gypsies and Their Journey” by Isabel Fonseca to be helpful.  The book was published in 1995 and is widely available.

Journal entries for Kiril Ivanov Shekerdankov

Sunny Beach work

Entrepreneur: Kiril Ivanov Shekerdankov
Location: Sliven, Bulgaria

Kiril has been in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach since June with 8 colleagues performing Roma folk music. The performances have been a combination of contracted shows at hotels and restaurants as well as street shows during their free time. Crowds have been larger than last year, as more western tourists have been packing the resort. One thing they’ve noticed is that western tourists translate into larger tips during street performances, so Kiril and his colleagues have been making more time for them. Kiril is alone in not having made any repayments to his loan yet, but assures us that they will be coming this fall.
