Her husband, Mr. Tes Ya, drives a motorcycle taxi and earns about $2 a day.

She is now asking for a loan of $1000 to expand her dried fish-selling business and further her children’s studies. She thanks Kiva and promises to be prompt in repaying her loan.

Checking In with San Ra Kies

Entrepreneur: San Ra Kies
Location: Phnom Penh City, Cambodia

San Ra Kies lives with her husband Tes Ya and six children at their home in the northern outskirts of Phnom Penh. I had the chance to check in with her the other day and see how her business was doing. San Ra Kies wakes up around 1AM most mornings to purchase fish in bulk, which she cleans with her daughters and dries for resale at the Kilomet 6 market. She explained to me that she intended to use the bulk of her loan to expand her dried fish business, but circumstances changed. Tes Ya drives a motorbike taxi, and they decided to use part of the loan to purchase a new moto. His old one frequently needed costly repairs, so they felt that a new moto would be a smarter investment. Less time in the repair shop means Tes Ya has seen his average daily income increase from $2 to $3.50. In addition to the new moto, San Ra Kies also had to use part of the loan for medical care when she injured her back. For a while she was unable to walk, but now she feels much better. San Ra Kies invested the remainder of the loan into her fish-selling business. This is her first loan through Hattha Kaksekar Limited. She told me that when her son returns from school in Malaysia she plans to take out a new loan to help her son start up a small business selling sugar cane juice. Despite her injury, San Ra Kies’s business is doing well, and she has successfully repaid $168 of her $1,000 loan so far. She is pictured here sorting fish with her daughter.
