Kuy Sorm Orn

Over the next 12 months, Hattha Kaksekar Limited (HKL) will be collecting repayments from this entrepreneur and posting progress updates on the Kiva website.

During a branch tour I wanted to visit the client to write a journal entry about her Kiva experience, little did I know what a challenge it would be to visit Mrs. Kuy Som Orn in Kompong Tom. We took an offroad truck along a narrow, pothole-ridden road in the village, then jumped on motorbikes to travel through the countryside and walked across a makeshift bridge that wasn’t fit for a motorbike. The trip wouldn’t be complete without a downpour of rain that seemed to come out of nowhere. Treks like this one make the Kiva Fellowship interesting!

When we arrived at Mrs. Kuy Som Orn, she rushed us inside of her house to help us escape the rain. When we sat down she explained to me that they used the Kiva loan to purchase a boat, motor, fishing net, and then used the small remainder of the loan for children expenses. Mrs. Orn’s husband, Mr. Sem Sorm, now has much more success while fishing, though they had difficulty estimating a change in income, because of the erratic nature of his income. He has future plans to further expand his fishing business buy purchasing another boat. The couple would also like to purchase oxen as an investment in their rice farming activities. Having oxen would allow them to plow the fields more easily and could be used for breeding or food later on.

They are thankful for the loan from Kiva and plan to repay diligently.
