María Cristina is the coordinator of a group of five businesswomen who live in the Carretón community of Baní, San Cristobal. María is 35 years old, and has three school-going children, two boys and a girl. She sells men’s and women’s clothing. María explains that she started her business last year when she realized that her husband’s salary could not bear all the family’s expenses.

Currently, she has a lot of customers that regularly visit her house to buy her goods. Bi-weekly, María Cristina has to go outside her community to Santo Domingo, the capital, to get garments at very good price. With her loan, María Cristina will buy clothing in bulk in order to restock her business and satisfy her customers’ needs.

The other members of the group are:
Fiordaliza Carmona, a 26-year-old mother of three children. She’ll invest her loan to buy pants, tennis gear, and perfumes for her business.
Aracelis Melo Pinales is the owner and operator of a beauty parlor. She’ll buy an assortment of beauty products for her store.
Julia Melo will buy some fashionable pants, skirts, and shirts for her business.
Argentina Suarez will buy clothing in bulk to replenish her small store.
