Mariana is 54 and lives with her son in Villa Flor de Managua. For the last five years she has been working for AHIMSA, an organization that provides free food, education and medicines to children from low income families in the Memorial Sandino neighborhood.

Mariana is the coordinator of AHIMSA's Family Social Program, and her social work with this program has contributed to the continued development of her community. What she earns for her work with this organization has been very beneficial, as it allows her to pay for her son's studies. He is currently studying to be able to obtain employment that will further his development. Mariana's husband currently works for Enacal [Nicaragua's state water and sewage utility]. Mariana and her husband have been working to improve their family's quality of life, and right now their most pressing need is to be able to finish construction on their house's porch. They have been unable to complete the project because they don't have the resources to do so.
