Ms. Bradis is 32 and lives with her family in Hialeah. She has been selling cosmetics door-to-door for five years, visiting workplaces, universities, banks, etc. The income she makes from these sales goes towards covering her family's living expenses, including her three children, who are currently in school. Her husband works as a trucker driver for Petronic and has to spend a lot of time traveling outside of Nicaragua. Therefore, her business has brought them enough income to be able to support the family, while her husband's salary covers their basic housing costs. The family lives in good conditions, and Ms. Bradis' business has allowed her to make improvements to their home and further her goal of providing a decent and safe home for her children. At present, the family needs help in order to finish construction on their kitchen. They still need to build the floor and railings, and she is therefore seeking a loan to be able to finish off the kitchen.

Loan update from Nicaragua!

Entrepreneur: Bradis Pavon Sanchez
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

The house of Bradis Sanchez and her family is clearly not the same house it was a few years ago. As you may remember, you helped fund a loan on Kiva in March of 2008 to provide resources that would allow Bradis to purchase materials and finish construction on a kitchen.

This was actually the 7th micro-loan that Bradis has been granted through AFODENIC, one of Kiva’s partners here in Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Her husband still has his job, she has hers, and now their daughter has started working and bringing in money for the family. These loans have allowed her to improve different part of the house, funding one project at a time, and together they have had income enough to pay back the loans. When we stopped in to follow up on her Kiva loan, everything looked practically brand new, though it has unfolded over a long period of time. There were three new bedrooms built in a new concrete structure behind the house, the ceiling had the metal beams which are common improvement for holding up the roof when one can afford it, and the main bedroom and bathroom had shiny tiles on the floor.

With the money from this Kiva loan she was able to purchase materials and then pay to install that kitchen for the house with high quality ceramics work. On a local scale that begins with having a modern kitchen at all, construction starts with functionality, and aesthetics, design, and even color are often a luxury, but your loan helped install a kitchen whose tiles are a downright beautiful addition to their house. She explained that a sizeable part of the money was needed to pay the workers, because they had decided to use people who were a step above the cheapest because she had heard of others who went with inexpensive labor and had their tiles fall off in a relatively short time.

Bradis’s 19 year old daughter attends a local university and is pretty internet saavy, and she is eager to see their posting on Kiva and check out the site that brought people together to make this loan. Thanks for supporting these improvements in housing conditions for Bradis and her family in Managua.
