Santos Evelia Rodríguez Aliaga is 40 years old. She lives in Mache district, Otuzco province, La Libertad department, Peru. She has three dependent children.

Over time she has become a very successful businesswoman. Currently, she has an agriculture/veterinary supply store called “Otiniano”, where she sells plant medicines, fertilizers and insecticides (in both powder and liquid forms), pesticides, and other products for agricultural activities. At her business, she has installed a small vitrine in which she displays hardware products.

She studied Accounting, and when she finished her studies, she got a job with the municipality of Mache, where she worked for 6 years. She later married and started a family. Due to the need to stay at home to care for her children, she got the idea of starting up the business she currently has. Things have gone well for her, since she is the only person in the neighborhood who sells these products. She has always noticed the unmet needs of consumers and realized that there was no good place for visitors to stay in Mache, so she opened a small hostel.

She is one of the founding members of the “Mujeres con Futuro” (Women with a Future) communal bank, which she joined 5 years ago. The first loan she received was for S/. 300.00 and she used the money to start her agriculture/veterinary supply store.

With this loan of S/. 2000.00, which she will repay in 4 months, she will buy 1 box of Hieloxil, a product that is used to cure infections of potato plants and which is very much in demand during this season; 1 box of Tifón, which is for killing weevils; and 1 box of Extrafox.

Santos dreams of having another business location, which she would make into a large and modern hardware store.

Santos Evelia Rodriguez Aliaga is 41 years old. She has three children aged twelve, ten and four years old. She is pictured above at the monthly meeting of her communal bank Mujeres con Futuro. Santos has been a member of the bank for ten years now and she has used her Kiva loans to help scale her fertilizer and agrochemical store.

She sells all types of agricultural products and also medicines and salves for farm animals. Before she opened this business she was a secretary for the city of Mache where she lives. But she likes have her own business much more because she has more freedom to take care of her children and the potential to earn more through her own hard work. Santos is gearing up for a good season of sales in November, December and January when the farmers are harvesting their crops. Even though business is going very well for Santos, she is a strong believer in savings because she has seen how one illness or bad crop year can derail an entire family’s prosperity and stability.

Santos is using her Kiva loan to help her purchase products for the summer selling campaign that is about to start and also to help support her mother in her fruit selling business.
