Edelmira Teodora Avalos Castillo is 54 years old and has 6 children who depend on her.

Her business is buying men's and women's clothing which she then sells on Sundays in different hamlets.

She lives in the Cuyuchugo hamlet in the Usquíl district of Otuzco province in the department of La Libertad.

She's had an entrepreneurial spirit since she was 18 years old, offering a few products to her community. When she started, she made her income by selling fruits and vegetables and was able to save up her money.

Edelmira is part of Banco Comunal "San Juan de Miraflores" and received her first loan of 300 soles (3 soles = $1) which she used to buy wholsesale clothing and fabrics to make aprons, skirts and tablecloths.

With the loan of 2500 soles, that she will repay in full in 4 months, she'll buy 20 meters of fabric and thread, as well as, shirts, sweaters and pants that she will sell later.

Her ideal would be to have a store in her home.

Edelmira Teodora Ávalos Catillo lives in the Andean village of Cuyuchugo in the department of La Libertad in northern Perú. Edelmira’s town is an isolated, close knit farming community that has no internet connections or widespread telephone coverage. Edelmira is 55 years old and lives with her long time partner. She has raised eight children here in Cuyuchugo. Life is difficult in the mountains; most people make their living growing corn or selling goods in neighboring towns.

Edelmira’s business is to make and sell clothing which she sells during market days in nearby villages. Because her own town is small and also because there is little money in Cuyuchugo, she must travel with her goods to where there are more potential customers. When business is very slow, she prepares food to sell as well.

Edelmira invested her Kiva loan in cloth and clothing materials as well as her bus tickets to other towns where she sells her wares. Edelmira says the Kiva loans help her continue to earn a living. Her goal is to continue working and supporting herself and her family.
