The flowers are in bloom!

Entrepreneur: Hong Kheav
Location: Kean Svay District, Cambodia

Hong Kheav requested a $300 loan from Kiva several months ago to support his flower business. Mr. Kheav grows jantu, small white flowers which play an important role in Cambodian religious and social ceremonies. He tends to his small field near his house and then sells the flowers to locals in the markets of nearby Phnom Penh. The last three years his crop failed, leaving the Kheav family with very little income. His loan from Kiva helped restart and replant the crop this season and Mr. Kheav is happy to share that his crop is successfully in bloom.

Mr. Kheav has been able to use the income from his crops to take care of daily household expenses, food, and water for his family. He has also been able to afford to purchase gifts for his neighbor’s weddings and celebration, a gesture which in Khmer culture is very important and highly valued.

In August the price of jantu flowers will rise as the celebration of many Khmer holidays around this time will increase the demand for the crop. Mr. Kheav hopes that until then he can continue to maintain his profit margin despite the rising cost of fuel, and subsequently, fertilizer. His daughter is still in school and when asked what his wishes are for his children’s future he says he hopes they will decide for themselves what they want.
