Rehema Njau and her subgroup took the money from the loan and disappeared. Although an unlikely occurrence, it is a very real aspect of microfinance. According to Tujijenge Tanzania’s group loan policy, it is the responsibility of the rest of the group to guarantee each other’s loans. So in this case, the loan was repaid by the other members of Mtaji wa Maskini, and as Kiva lenders, your money will be returned. The remaining members of Mtaji wa Maskini are obviously upset, but they remain together as a strong group and will be starting another loan cycle with Tujijenge Tanzania.
