Rehema Njau, age 38, is married and has 4 children (ages 18, 16, 15, and 12). She has a poultry business which she started 4 years ago. Her business is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, and Rehema is able to make a monthly profit of around US$43.3.

In the past, Rehema has taken out one previous loan with Tujijenge Tanzania which she used to buy suit materials for sale, and to expand her poultry business. She now hopes to receive a new loan for further business expansion. She will share this loan with her sub-group members who have businesses in food, clothing, and livestock sales.

An Unfortunate Tale…

Entrepreneur: Mtaji Wa Maskini C Group
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Greetings from Tanzania! Thank you for supporting Rehema Njau and subgroup C of Mtaji wa Maskini. Unfortunately, things did not go well with this subgroup. Rehema Njau and her subgroup took the money from the loan and disappeared. Although an unlikely occurrence, it is a very real aspect of microfinance. According to Tujijenge Tanzania’s group loan policy, it is the responsibility of the rest of the group to guarantee each other’s loans. So in this case, the loan was repaid by the other members of Mtaji wa Maskini, and as Kiva lenders, your money will be returned. The remaining members of Mtaji wa Maskini are obviously upset, but they remain together as a strong group and will be starting another loan cycle with Tujijenge Tanzania.

As believers in microfinance, I encourage you to not let this story get you down too much. Although microfinance is not yet perfect, it has helped millions of people around the world. As it grows as an industry and becomes more formalized, MFIs will be able to develop better methods to ensure repayment and avoid situations such as these.

Tujijenge Tanzania truly appreciates your support of their clients. To see other loans being fundraised by Tujijenge Tanzania, please click on the following link: http://www.kiva.org/app.php?page=businesses&partner_id=87&status=fundRaising&sortBy=New+to+Old&_tpg=fb
