The committee “San Francisco Group” is made up of 15 working women from the neighborhood of San Francisco in the city of Caacupé, Paraguay. They all make and sell “chipas” (traditional corn and cheese breads) as walking saleswomen. They are in their sixth cycle of the program sponsored by Mujeres Emprededoras (Enterprising Women), and their group is unusual in that it is the only committee made up of women who are all dedicated to the same activity. Generally group members pursue different endeavors.

The women of this group are dedicated to the making and sale of “chipas.” La chipa is a typicial dish in Paraguay, made from a base of starch, eggs and milk. It is similar to a cheese bread and eaten a lot in the region, so the demand for these products is quite high. La chipa is baked in a “tatakua,” which is a mud oven. The women of San Francisco Group prepare the chipa in the early morning so that at first light they can sell their baked breads fresh from the oven.

Mrs. Cándida Lugo notes that this group of women has a strong sense of solidarity. She recalls that two of the group members had health problems recently and the committee took action in order to help the ill women manage the costs of hospitalization and the purchase of medicines.

The group is requesting credit in order to purchase ingredients such as eggs, starch, cheese, milk, and other items for the making of their products.
