Marcia is 48 years old, married, and has 3 daughters, 2 of them are in high school and the other is at college. Her husband is the breadwinner and assumes responsibility for the entire family's living expenses as well as their children's tuition and school fees. Marcia is responsible for her elderly mother, who is sick and requires care, attention, and medication. Seeing that her husband was unable to provide for her mother's medical costs, Marcia decided to look for an alternative way to earn income to cover all expenses for taking care of her mother. This is how she came to sell cosmetics amongst her friends, neighbors, and to the general public. Doing this has allowed her to support her family when there was a need. Marcia wishes to set up a store to sell various items for women, men, and children and offer different product lines so she does not have to do business in the streets and leave her mother and children alone. Currently, this woman needs to buy cosmetics such as lipstick, nail polish, eyeshadow, perfumes because these are the products in demand.

Avon Lady

Entrepreneur: Marcia Aurora Urcuyo Cabrera
Location: Managua, Nicaragua

Simply so you know who is the voice of this progress update, my name is Jon and I am a Kiva Fellow working with AFODENIC; the micro finance institution that loans to Marcia.

As I barreled in to the barrio on another hot day of the dry season here in Nicaragua the wind was up and dust was everywhere. I took refuge in the house of Marcia Aurora and had a chat with her about her business. Marcia is an Avon lady and pushes their cosmetics line. She doesn’t sell to people in her barrio because the luxury items that are the Avon cosmetics line are too pricey for folks in her neighborhood. Marcia hits the city everyday around 1pm to prospect for business and ends her day normally between 6-7pm. Marcia goes to banks, offices, and other places where folks can afford Avon products.

The first thing I asked about when I met Marcia was her mother’s health. Marcia gave me the “mas or menos” response, which translates exactly to “more or less.” She told me that her mother has some sort of gastro-intestinal problem and had surgery in the recent past. Her mother is 75 years old and has ongoing medical costs and medical problems that affect her mobility.

Later on in our conversation, I talked numbers with Marcia about her business because I am always interested in how much people make from the activities in to which they put so much effort. Marcia told me that she clears a 25% margin on the Avon products she sells and makes about $260 a month, which, to be honest, is a pretty decent wage for somebody in Nicaragua. Marcia needs the loans to buy a large shipment of product every so often because she spends her earnings on life and medicine for her mother.
