With his loan from Kiva (through DINARI), Suyono has continued to grow his business of purchasing coconut shells, turning them into coal and reselling at a profit. The additional capital enabled Suyono to purchase greater quantities of shells from Java, instead of purchasing smaller quantities at a higher price in Bali.

Suyono’s business growth is almost entirely based on increasing the amount of coconuts he can process. With each 35 kg bag of coconut shells that Suyono purchases for about Rp10,000 (about $1.10), he can create a smaller quantity of coal, which he can then sell for Rp25,0000 (about $28). In two days, Suyono can process about 45 bags of coconut shells.

Suyono lives in Bali with his wife of nine years, Sarini. Because schools in Java are much cheaper, Suyono’s seven year old son, Kholip, lives in Java with his grandparents and attends school there. Suyono hopes that he will continue to grow his coal production business so that he can afford to have his son life with him in Bali. Already the additional profits from the Kiva loan have enabled Suyono to purchase a motorbike that he and his wife use to go see their son.
