Suzan Nassozi, the chairperson of Akutwala Ekiro Women’s Group, is 29 years old. She is married and cares for her 2 children and three other relatives. She has been running a restaurant business for 11 years at Mengo hospital and her clients are mostly patients and their caretakers. Over the past 18 months she has received loans of various amounts just like her group members. Although she is married, Suzan's husband is mostly away from home, leaving the responsibility of her home to herself. She plans to expand her restaurant by buying more utensils like saucepans, plates, and forks, which will enable her to prepare more dishes for her customers like matooke (cooked unripened bananas that are wrapped in banana leaves), rice, posho, and cassava. Suzan is really hard working.

This is a group loan. The loan funds will be distributed among the group members, each of whom will invest in her own business. The members mutually guarantee one another's loans. If one member does not repay, the other members are responsible.

About Group Loans
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee. Under this arrangement, each member of the group supports one another and is responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members if someone is delinquent or defaults. Learn more

As long as Mengo hospital has patients, Nassozi Suzan can never be out of business, and if it ever happens, she can find another location because of her delicious meals. Her 11year old restaurant is doing well and it has enabled her to repay her loans on time. The profits help with taking care of her home as well as paying school fees. Hence a need for the loans to restock food and sorting out rent for the hospital premises. Her customer base has expanded because the only hindrance was the lack of utensils and in addition, she managed to get more comfortable seats for the ever increasing customers. She is now a variety woman.
