10 years ago Eneyda started her business selling typical food (from the Peruvian jungle) at her house’s doorstep. Indeed, she is a very hard working woman and the economical need pushed her to start this business.

Before having the food business, she would wash clothes for others and she would help her husband at his carpenter's workshop. Nevertheless, when her husband hurt his back, Eneyda started to sell food and as sole infrastructure, she had a grill, a table and a batan (a kitchen utensil from Peru made in stone).
Still, she has a good eye for business and that is why she would like to open a store at her house or to put a roof on the 2nd floor in order to rent rooms. Indeed, there is a high demand of housing in the area as a University will open soon right in front of her house.

Translated from Spanish by Jimena Almendares Leistner, Kiva Volunteer.

End of Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Eneyda Cueva
Location: San Juan De Lurigancho-lima, Peru

Mrs. Eneida Cueva has used your loan both to buy ingredients necessary for her food sales business and to fix up her house a little. The past ten years of Mrs. Eneida’s fifty have been spent preparing typical food from Peru’s jungle to sell in San Juan de Lurigancho, a vast suburb of over a million people in the eastern part of Lima, Peru. Eneida has her knowledge of jungle cooking because she originally hails from the town of Pucallpa (see Kiva Fellow Jenny Ballen’s take on Pucallpa here: http://fellowsblog.kiva.org/2008/12/09/i-heart-you-pucallpa-peru/), one of the two main Amazonian towns in Peru (the other being Iquitos). Due to the success of her cooking business, Mrs. Eneida Cueva is able to babysit the children of her neighborhood without charging any fee. Mrs. Cueva’s dream is to improve the quality of life of her children and husband but her old age makes the realization of this dream hard work. Mrs. Eneida Cueva realizes that she will have to be smart about her business in order to weather the current economic crisis and maintain her profits. The capital she has been able to build from your loans will surely prove a bulwark of sorts during these rough times. Thank you for your loan to Mrs. Eneida Cueva and furthering the cause of jungle cooking in metro Lima!

Update on your loan administered by Kiva Field Partner EDAPROSPO

Entrepreneur: Eneyda Cueva
Location: San Juan De Lurigancho-lima, Peru

During a routine audit of Field Partner EDAPROSPO, Kiva discovered a number of discrepancies between the information posted to the Kiva website and what actually occurred on the ground. Specifically, many loans uploaded to the website before December 2008 contain inaccurate loan amounts, terms and/or loan uses.

This is in violation of Kiva policy, and as such, as soon as we were alerted to a possible violation we placed EDAPROSPO on "pause." After placing them on pause, Kiva proceeded to execute a complete verification of every loan EDAPROSPO posted to the Kiva website; in total we examined 757 loans.

As a result of our audit, we have discovered that 52% of the loans posted to the Kiva website by field partner EDAPROSPO contain data inaccuracies. 98% of these inaccuracies pertain to loans posted to the Kiva website before December 2008, when EDAPROSPO was under a different management team. After significant management turnover at the end of 2008, almost all loans on the Kiva website contain complete and accurate information and these loans comprise only 2% of the total discovered inaccuracies.

You are receiving this email as we wanted to alert you that, after our verification efforts, Kiva cannot confirm that the specific loan you funded was actually disbursed. We can, however, confirm that the person you lent to is an EDAPROSPO borrower. Because EDAPROSPO has decided to guarantee all loans made on Kiva, you have continued to receive repayments on schedule.

Because the new management team has proven that they are committed to providing accurate and transparent information to the Kiva website, and because they have repaid almost all of the inaccurate loans on-time, Kiva has decided to re-open the Kiva-EDAPROSPO relationship. During this new "pilot" phase on Kiva, we will be working closely with the new EDAPROSPO team, including their internal and external auditors, to continually verify new EDAPROSPO loans posted to Kiva, and if we are alerted to any new inaccuracies we will pause their relationship with Kiva and follow-up accordingly.
