Speaking with Saret

Entrepreneur: Saret Yoen
Location: Khsach Kandal District, Cambodia

Saret is happy to share with her Kiva lenders that she was successfully able to expand her stock of groceries as hoped and that business is doing very well!

We met with Saret yesterday in her home, where she explained that she used her Kiva loan to expand her stock of groceries and purchase oil for resell. As she lives on an island that is thirty minutes and a ferry ride away from the urban center of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, this business she runs is an important service to her neighbors. Before receiving her loan Saret had to rely on a middleman to receive her goods, as she lacked the capital to make such large purchases in bulk. With her loan, Saret was able to restock and expand her grocery store and was able to increase her profit margin by not having to purchase from the reseller. If she had not received a loan from MAXIMA, Kiva’s local field partner, Saret tells us none of this would have been possible.

With the increased profits Saret has been able to in turn directly increase the money she can bring home to her family. With their new income the family can purchase more food, pay for school fees for the children, and reinvest money into the grocery store for future expansion plans.

Saret hopes to continue working in her store and expanding her stock. Her daughter had to drop out of school to help her mother work but her four sons continue to attend local institutions. Saret hopes someday all of her children will get good jobs, as she says she hopes they don’t have to continue working in the store like she does and wants a better future for all of them.

Thank you for your support of Kiva, MAXIMA, and especially Saret. To hear more stories about MAXIMA and microfinance in Cambodia, please visit The Fellows Blog
