Florence Abalo is 32 years old and has two children, a boy and a girl. They came to Kampala when the war intensified in Northern Uganda and every body was being forced to move into the IDP Camps. She knew how hard life would be in the camps and she thought she could make a better life in the capital city of Kampala. She is a hard worker and believes in doing whatever it takes to provide for her children. She works at many things including housekeeping and running small businesses. She has had her best success in selling charcoal.

She now works in Invisible Children Bracelet Project at Life in Africa. Her sister, who also was forced to flee because of the war, lives with her and runs the charcoal business. Their lives have much improved but she realizes that the charcoal business can be much more profitable if you have the capital to stock more. For this reason, she wishes to expand her business by seeking a loan in the amount of 500,000.

With the additonal profits from the business, her salary at LiA,and the money she has already saved she plans to buy a piece of land. Here she will build a house for her family to live in and another house to rent out which will increase their income and allow them to live a better and more secure life.

Below is her budget in full:

Charcoal – 40 bags x 8,000/= -----320,000/=

Transport ----------- 160,000/=

Loading -------------- 20,000/=

Total ------------- 500,000/=

She will be able to repay this loan in 12 months. She has designated the community impact portion of the interest she will pay on the loan to support Life in Africa's Adult Education Program, where she is excited to now be learning English.

Journal update

Entrepreneur: Florence Abalo

Florence's business took off very well and was really paying very well . Her only disturbance was when she had a still birth last year and had to stay in hospital for two full weeks and was unable to cope up with work immediately ,and this was a total draw back for her , since with her type of work you are only paid for work done and not on monthly basis. She therefore had no hope of repaying back, but thanks to Florence's good friends who bailed her out by making paper beads for her and selling them at Life in Africa's market day to raise for her the loan money. So when she later got back to work, she got back to her feet and is now managing her payments with more ease ,as most of her arrears had earlier been covered by the help of her friends. She looks forward to finishing her loan in two months.

an update on Florence Abalo!

Entrepreneur: Florence Abalo
Location: Nakawa Market (kampala), Uganda

Florence is a single mother caring for two children and two dependents. She used her Kiva loan to sell charcoal in the Nakawa market. In business for one year, she turns a profit of 120,000ush/month from steady sales. The industry is a lucrative because the residents of Kampala use charcoal as their primary source of cooking fuel. Florence use to go the village herself to purchase supplies in bulk. However, the demands of motherhood and her second job working at Life in Africa on the Invisible Children bracelet project made such long excursions impossible. She has opted to purchase charcoal for retail sale from the traders who transport it from their villages to Kampala.

Florence has recently moved to the Acholi Quarters (and Internally Displaced Persons camp in Kampala) and is planning to relocate her business closer to home. Although she will disappoint the regular customers who frequent her stand in the Nakawa market, she is not worried about finding a new customer base in the Acholi Quarters.
