The community bank “Valle Totora” was started 12 months ago. Now they have completed two cycles and have 15 associates. Valle Totera, which is also the community all of the members come from, is a small valley, which is known for agriculture and raising animals; the surrounding land produces vegetables and alfalfa.

In the community bank, the associates have learned to be responsible, punctual, to save, how to invest, how to run a business, how to educate their children, and how to improve their relationships with their husbands. The associates have various businesses such as selling groceries, fruits, vegetables, fish, sodas and other drinks, taxi driving, growing vegetables, and raising animals.

Every associate has a different history they can tell, such as Maria, who started her business one year ago selling a few products. With a loan from her community bank she was able to further develop her business. Today, her store has grown significantly and has many customers.

On the other hand, Ligia Perlita has been selling cebiche, a traditional dish made from raw marinated fish, for the past five years. She mentioned that with her loan she would be able to improve her business and prepare more cebiche.

The associates are requesting loans of different sizes; many only need 300, 450, 500, and 900 soles (3 soles = $1) making a total of 7, 050 soles in loans from the community bank.

They will invest these loans in buying roosters, medicinal herbs, oranges, lemons, bananas, and to buy tables and chairs for the “cebicheria”--a café where they serve cebiche.

They plan to use their savings to make sure their children are able to continue school, to increase the capital available for their businesses, and some even to build a house.

Many dream of owning their own house, or having a car to transport their products, and that their children will study and be able to become professionals.

Valle Totora's Kiva loan

Entrepreneur: Valle Totora Group
Location: Ayacucho, Peru

The Valle Totora Village Bank is named for the area the group members live in. Most of the group members farm different kinds of vegetables, either on their own or rented land.

Valle Totora is located 20 minutes from the city of Ayacucho.

The group members received different loan amounts, which they invested in their respective businesses to make improvements, to offer a wider variety of merchandise, or to plant more crops.

Vilma is married and farms vegetables, which she sells in the Abastos Market in the city of Ayacucho. She used her loan to buy seeds.

Alicia has a store in a rented space on the highway, where she sells general dry goods. She used her loan to buy rice and sugar in order to offer a wider variety of products in her store.

Over the course of their loan term, the group members received a number of different training and educational sessions, which have helped them with their businesses and in their daily life.
