Update on Muhabbat's Businesses

Entrepreneur: Zikrillaeva Muhabbat
Location: Nau, Tajikistan

The loan officers at the Spitamen branch of MircroInvest tell me that I am unable to interview Muhabbat directly, but that I can talk to her husband instead. I meet him in the center of town in a slightly imposing, dimly lit government office building where his publishing business is headquartered. Over cups of green tea he tells me that his wife’s Kiva loan has had a great impact on the family, allowing them to buy two bulls that they fatten for several months and then sell for a modest profit. They usually make around $80 per bull and Muhabbat’s husband tells me that the family’s goal is to have five bulls, because with this number the cost of feeding them becomes more economical and they are able to reap a greater profit. In addition to livestock, Muhabbat’s family runs a small, Tajik version of “Kinko’s” where people are able to come in and make Xerox copies and have documents laminated. Muhabbat’s oldest daughter is married and her youngest is currently studying at the top university in the city of Khujand. With the profits from their expanded businesnesses Muhabbat and her husband been able to pay the university fees for their daughter and recently bought a bicycle for their 16-year-old son.
