Sharofat’s fruit business has grown significantly since receiving her Kiva loan. She has opened a new stand in the main bazaar in the city of Istaravshan and she has helped her daughter open up another fruit stall in Khujand, the regional capital. Before receiving her loan Sharofat bought her apples, grapes, berries, and other fruit in Istaravshan and then traveled daily to Khujand where she sold the products at the Panjshanbe bazaar. She has been able to make life much easier for herself by opening up a stall in Istaravshan and her daughter has taken over the duties of making the daily trip to Khujand. Her business has essentially doubled and she used her extra income to pay for her daughter’s wedding that took place last month. Weddings are quite expensive affairs in Tajikistan, especially for the parents of the bride, and there is a saying here that a wedding for one daughter costs as much as two weddings for two sons. Sharofat has eight daughters, six of which are married, and this mean that she has had to pay for a wedding annually during the past six years, and she still has two more to go.
