Anatona owns and operates a matatoo, or taxi van. Often made out of converted Toyota Vans, matatoos are prolific throughout Uganda and are the cheapest mode of transport. Each van can hold 14 passengers plus the driver and his assistant. Picture a passenger van designed to hold eight converted to hold 16 and you’ll get some idea of what it is like to be inside one of these. I use them all the time and they have become part of my cultural experience in Uganda.

The driver’s assistant hollers to pedestrians the driver’s destination. They then flag him down and on you go. People have to constantly get in and out to let people in and out. This is real packing ‘em in, bun to bun, babies and chickens in your lap kind of travel, but you can’t beat the price. (As I mentioned in other stories, I will be leaving Kiva soon and will sorely miss these wonderful experiences and telling you about them. Anatona has been driving his matatoo for 15 years and the van is getting old and in need of a lot of maintenance. He would like to buy a newer model but can not afford it, so he will use his loan to provide much needed maintenance for his van.

Anatona Kakooza update - Uganda Entrepreneur: Anatona Kakooza Location: Lugazi, Uganda Anatoma is very happy with the loans he has been receiving over the years. He operates a 14-seater minibus taxi on the Lugazi-Matale route. He spoke comfortably about the finances involved in his business. Each day he uses US$25 of fuel , pays his conductor US$2 and takes around US$75 in fares. This US$50 gross profit also has to pay for road tax and vehicle repairs but his net profit enables him to support his ten children - four of which are still at school. John plans to continue to take more loans and one day he hopes to be able to buy another minibus and pay someone to drive for him.
