The ladies of the coop bank «Flor del Lago Panajachel» have unparalleled hopes that their businesses will succeed. These hopes will be able to materialize thank to their first loan that they will receive on behalf of the Kiva investors.

The new future clients are very extroverted and witty. This must be because they live in Panajachel, a town that has high turism, and they are exposed to all types of people from many different cultures.

This group of women are very hard workers. They alll work in different businesses. Maria Ajun mines Piedrin (a material that is used in building houses) on the shores of the Panajachel River, others knit items of traditional clothing, and there is a smaller group among these that work as jewellers working with mostacilla beads. Maria Zenaida resells CDs, DVDs and MP3s. And finally, Telma Roldan has a mobile cosmetics business.

The will use their share of the loan for different things. Some will want to purchase fabrics to make pants. Other will want to purchase yarn for embroidering traditional clothing, and table cloths among other things. Maria will want to use her share of the loan to purchase more piedrin material in the river so that she will be able to sell more in return.

Eventhough the market is in their favor, many clients have faced different obstacles in life such as not have had the privilege of an education, competence, and lack of capital funds. Nonetheless, thanks to this loan and the education that the FriendshipBride has provided these women, they will be able to branch out on their own.

Anselma Morales' dream is to pruchase large quantities of materials to produce beaded jewellery at the lowest possible cost and this way corner the local market. Isabel Solis comented that she would like to expand her food production business and start a restaurant. Nelly Velasquez dreams of purchasing a small piece of land.

These women have high hopes and wonderful dreams, if they are given the support that they need they will be able to realize their dreams. This support can come from you. Take this opportunity to make a difference in the world.

One of the clients is missing from the photo. She was absent due to medical reasons.

Journal on one of the members

Entrepreneur: Flor Del Lago Panajachel Group
Location: Panajachel, Guatemala

I went to interview Cecilia as a representative of the Flor de Lago group, because she lives right behind the Friendship Bridge office. Cecilias business in selling all kinds of Foods is going very well. She used her credit to buy a refrigerator. This way she can save leftovers and cook bigger amounts of food. She uses a hand-car to take her small store to the corner of the street where she sells her goods every afternoon.

This is a very good street corner because it is right in front of the post office and it makes me very curious how a woman this young managed to be able to reserve this good spot for herself. She tells me wit a smile it is actually her mum who has arranged this for her; mother sells in the morning and Cecilia sells in the afternoon. This way they both have a great business and they won’t lose the spot!

They all live together in three houses situated around the washing basket and a tree. And a little open space where the children play. They placed a big table there as well for the reunions of the Flor de Lago group.

As a mother of three she wishes the kids will have good opportunities in schooling and for herself she would really like to go back to school as well. Her youngest has a bit a flue at the moment and she tells me she likes to take care of children in need. This is why if she would have the opportunity, she would go back to school herself and study medicine!

School is expensive and especially because her daughter needs extra care. The girl called Rosalinda has a bit a learning disability and although she is seven; isn’t fully able to speak yet. This extra care for her is something Cecilia cannot afford now. Rosalinda overhears us talking about her and walks towards us to show the little cat she is holding in her hands. This is a word she definitely knows, and we all chat about the cat for a couple minutes. And soon after her bigger brother called Anderson sits with us on the table to chat with us too!

I leave this friendly family after feeling very welcome and am escorted towards the street by Anderson and Rosalinda who give me the biggest smiles ever when I say they are such friendly and sweet kids.
