Abdumalick was in the Mastchoh bazaar today tending to his store. His primary business is in raising livestock, but, like most people in Tajikistan, he has a second business to earn income. He sells milk and dairy products from his farm as well as sugar, oil, tea and candies. The other items he purchases on his twice weekly trips to Khujand. In this northern part of Tajikistan – the Sughd – Khujand is the main center of commerce and the source of most goods traded in the villages. Abdumalick reports that he and his family are doing well and sends his thanks to Kiva lenders.

Mastchoh district, in Northern Tajikistan, was desert land prior to 50 years ago when the USSR forced mountain dwellers in the region to come populate the valley for cotton cultivation. Without any source of surface water, most of the residents rely on pumping it from the ground. Power outages and mechanical failures frequently occur and the availability of water for drinking or irrigation is irregular. Last summer the area experienced a severe drought and, as a result, livestock feed prices have doubled from last winter. Because of its remote location, the price of goods is often more expensive than in the city. The people of this area are especially dependent on local farmers and traders to supply their essentials.
