Peter has just been promoted to Foreman at the Life in Africa WE Center in Kampala. His hope is to eventually return to University for further studies, but in Peter’s family it’s become urgent that he starts to think about finding a wife – two of his younger brothers have serious girlfriends they would like to marry, but it is against custom for them to marry before their older brothers do. With his recent promotion, Peter also believes it’s time he started to think seriously about his future, and a wife is definitely part of the plan.

In Uganda, however, marriage is not a day long event but a long process that begins at the point Peter finds himself now. Since it’s taboo for any girl Peter brings home to enter his father’s house, the first thing that must happen is that Peter builds a house of his own on his father’s land in Tororo (Eastern Uganda). Peter has been saving for this purpose and would like a loan of shs. 800,000 ($475) to add to what he has saved and complete the house quickly.

Peter is an extremely sincere, hardworking and capable young man, and very popular with the Life in Africa members - who are all now wondering who his choice of bride will be!

Below is Peter’s budget:

Cement 20 Bags @ 17000 = 52000

Sand 2 Trips @ 30000 = 60000

Doors 4 @ 50000 = 200000

Windows 4 @ 15000 = 60000

Nails 4kg @ 4000 = 16000

Based on his current income, Peter will be able to repay this loan in 8 months. He has designated a portion of the interest he pays on the loan to support Life in Africa’s Internet4change Program.

an update on Peter Ndelo!

Entrepreneur: Peter Ndelo
Location: Kampala, Uganda

On the Board of Directors, Peter is involved in overseeing the microfinance loan program and accounting operations for Life in Africa. He is saving his income to go back to school and attain a higher education. Growing up in a large family, Peter was responsible for financing his own education. To afford school fees Peter split his days; mornings were spent working as a cleaner at Life in Africa so he could pay to attend classes during the evening.

Peter hopes a university will equip him with the requisite tools and skills to operate his own business. Peter used his Kiva loan to build a house in his home village in Tororo (1 of Uganda’s 79 districts). However, he did not want to move back home until he found a wife to start his family. Peter has since met a wonderful woman and is now engaged! A hopeful entrepreneur, his dream is to live in the village and start a screen printing business. Peter is confident that he will attract many customers because no existing shops in Tororo offer such services. Instead of exporting work orders to surrounding districts, future consumers will be able to satisfy their printing needs at his store.
