Zarina Abdulghani is a widow with three children. When her husband died unexpectedly she had just given birth to the third child and she was left with the sole responsibility of providing for herself and her children. This is no easy task for a woman in Uganda but Zarina was determined and remarkably managed to obtain a job as a housekeeper in Kampala. It was through this job that she was introduced to Life in Africa and she has been an active member for the last five years.

Zarina saw value in building rental properties as a way to provide for her children's education. She managed to secure several loans through Life in Africa and built a solid housing unit in a poor section of Kampala. She has several tenants living in her property now and she was able to responsibly pay back all her loans. She earns an income from this property of shs. 200,000 ($111) each month. But the house is not yet plastered. She wants to finish the outside properly now to ensure that her tenants have quality housing for their families and to insure the value and durability of her investment.

Zarina is seeking a loan in the amount of shs. 800,000 ($475) to complete the plastering of the property. Her budget is listed below.

20 bags of cement @ 17000= 340000=

sand 80000=

labor 300000=

transport 50000=

other expenses 30000=

Total 800000=

Based on her current income, Zarina will be able to pay off this loan in 4 months. She has desig-nated 1/4 of the interest she pays to support craft skills development workshops at Life in Africa, which she enjoys taking part in.

An update on Zarina Abdulghani!

Entrepreneur: Zarina Abdulghani
Location: Kampala, Uganda

Zarina is a landlord utilizing her second Kiva loan to finance renovations for her rental properties. Tin ceiling provide adequate shelter from precipitation, but consequently attract and trap heat inside the buildings. Zarina purchased paneling to create more pleasant living environments for her tenants. Once affixed to the roof, rooms will be insulated from dramatic temperature changes. The 250,000ush she is borrowing from Kiva is enough to upgrade the ceilings for two of her seven apartments. Once she is able to repay this loan in a full and timely manner she hopes to take out a larger loan to complete renovations for the remaining five properties.

Zarina profits 280,000ush/month when there are no vacancies. Paying school fees for three children limits Zarina’s ability to save money. She deposits 100,000ush/month into a bank account. As a widow and single mother, Zarina works from 8am until 7pm during the week as a housekeeper. The supplemental income from this job ensures that she can afford the hike in school fees when it is time for her children to graduate from primary to secondary school.

Zarina was forced to discontinue her education because of the civil war. Originally from Jinga, Zarina was in Soroti visiting relatives when the fighting reached a climax. Zarina fled to escape the warfare, but could not get away as the bloodbath continued. She described vivid memories of walking down the road barefoot and passing thousands of dead bodies. Losing her brother to the rebels, Zarina was grateful to have survived the terrible ordeal.

When asked how she balances her responsibilities as a single parent, housekeeper, and landlord, Zarina replied, “It is not easy, but I have to stay strong.”
