Thirty-seven year old Salma Ruhaka is a busy woman. She is married and a mother of three, Hussein, 10, Mussa, 7, and Hassani, 5. She is employed by the Tanzanian Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs as an Assistant Registration Officer and also runs three businesses! In 2000 she began selling bags of concrete and in 2004 added the sale of soda to her ventures. This year Salma opened a shop from which to sell her goods, to which she added a variety of building materials such as steel, gravel and pebbles. She requires a loan of $1,050.00 to further establish and expand this business by purchasing additional stock in bulk. Salma has successfully repaid one loan from SELFINA and is determined to do so again.

SELFINA is engaged in economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through a leasing and leaseback facility as a practical way to achieve economic and social emancipation of women.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro Leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, thus they are termed not credit worthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support, hence poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital, SELFINA buys equipment from the said client, extending a loan to her, and then leases back the same equipment – a process called sale and leaseback arrangement.

Entrepreneur: Salma Ruhaka
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Mambo from Dar es Salaam! The purpose of this journal is to update you on Salma Ruhaka, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur, who received a loan from you through Kiva.

Salma received her loan in january 2008, and is on track to finish her loan this june. Salma's soft drinks business is doing good, and business has grown a lot. She used her loan from Kiva to purchase additional stock of soft drinks such as soda and juice. Her business is now generating a monthly profit of 500 usd, up from 300 before she received the loan. Salma has used the extra profit to make loan repayments, paying school fees for her children, and pay electricity and water bills. Salma works at her business for 7 days per week for about 13 hours per day. Her husband and one employee assist her in running her soda shop. Salma also works at the Ministry of Law as neither her salary nor business alone is enough to support her and her family. Both Salma and her family are good. All three of her children are in school . In the future, Salma hopes to expand her business. She thanks all the Kiva lenders who contributed to her business.

SELFINA aims to continue to assist Salma and other women like her and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you for your generosity in supporting Salma! To continue to lend to SELFINA borrowers, please click here:
