Subgroup B Of Tuwezeshane

Halima, age 42, is married with 4 children (ages 24, 20, 16, and 14). She has had a small café for 10 years and has been selling powered soap and fabrics for 2 years. She starts selling food at her cafe, which is located on someone else’s veranda, from 6am to 2pm daily. She pays the owner a small amount for the use of the veranda, depending on her profit. She charges around 70 cents per plate, making a total of about $5 to $5.50 in profit per day. After 2pm each day, she sells powered soap and fabrics door-to-door, making a profit of around $36 per week. Her children are helping her in these businesses. Her husband has a small business of selling fish and mangoes.

Halima is the leader of Subgroup B of Group Tuwezeshane (Swahili for “Let's help each other”), which totals 24 members. She will be sharing this loan with subgroup members: Lydia Vicent (sells food), Habiba Zohange (sells charcoal), Halima Shabaan (sells food), Regan Marandu (sells radios), and Clementina Nyenza (sells clothes). Halima and her subgroup have taken 3 previous loans from Tujijenge Tanzania to enhance their businesses and were able to pay them back successfully.

Halima used the previous loans on her business, which has allowed her to purchase land and start building a 3-roomed house. With the new loan, she hopes to increase her businesses’ stock and to finish the construction of their new home.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a group of individuals bound by a group guarantee.
