In the busy town of Kibaha Kwa Matias, Fatuma Mwaimu runs a busy little eatery popular amongst locals, who pop in for a lunch of rice, beans, ugali (maize porridge), cassava, vegetables, meat and soda. Fatuma established the business in 2003 and has since successfully repaid two loans from SELFINA. She now requires a loan of $525 to purchase new utensils and inventory for the café.

Fatuma is a single mother of two, Chande, 16, and Happy, 14, and her business enables her to support her family. She thanks you for your help as she works toward expanding her business turnover.

About SELFINA

SELFINA is engaged in economic empowerment of women in Tanzania through a leasing and leaseback arrangement as a practical way to achieve economic and social emancipation.

SELFINA has taken a lead role as a pioneer of micro-credit in Tanzania through Micro Leasing. Customs and traditions in Tanzania normally make it difficult for women to own land and assets, and they are therefore termed not-creditworthy by financial institutions as they lack tangible collateral assets. This leads to poor financial support and poor access to basic needs and services for women with low incomes.

SELFINA buys and leases equipment to women. Where a client needs working capital, SELFINA buys equipment from the said client, extending a loan to her, and then leases back the same equipment – a process called "sale and leaseback".

Update on your kiva loan to Fatuma Mwaimu!

Entrepreneur: Fatuma Mwaimu
Location: Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Dear lenders,

Mambo (Greetings!) from Tanzania and from SELFINA! Thank you for your loan through Kiva to Fatuma Mwaimu, a SELFINA client and micro-entrepreneur. The purpose of this journal is to update you on Fatuma and the status of her business.

As you know, your generosity helped Fatuma obtain a loan of $525. She is running a cafe and used the loan to purchase additional raw materials for her café such as sukari (sugar) and maharage (beans) as well as sodas to quench her patrons’ thrist. In addition, she used the loan to purchase prepaid cell phone vouchers to sell at her café as she was noticing that competition was impeding on her café business profits. She works at her business 13 to 16 hours a day, 7 days a week and is assisted by her husband and her mother. Since she took out the loan, her business has been doing well and Fatuma’s monthly profits have increased from about $75 to approximately $150. However, she is worried about the continued success of her business as both theft and competition area prevalent in her area and may negatively impact her.

SELFINA aims to continue to assist Fatuma and other women like her, and empower them towards financial security and increased confidence through microloans. Thank you very much for supporting Fatuma! To continue to support women like her and lend to SELFINA borrowers, please click here:
